Pain while breastfeeding: what is normal and what is not

March 20266 min read

Mild tenderness in the first few days can happen. Ongoing sharp pain, cracked nipples, or pain throughout feeds usually means something needs correction.

Most often, pain improves when latch depth, baby positioning, and breast support are corrected. Sometimes oral restrictions, engorgement, or infection are also involved.

Do not wait for pain to “settle on its own.” A focused assessment can relieve discomfort and protect your feeding confidence.

Quick takeaways

  • Persistent pain is a signal, not a normal endpoint
  • Latch and positioning are the first things to optimize
  • Get evaluated early if pain continues beyond a few days
